Fantasy Map for DND Thing
« on: April 24, 2015, 10:40:51 PM »
MAP

A little bit of info on what I'm doing with this world, this is a rough sketch of the map, very rough. I made a little tectonic history with it then I plan to really expand on it.

The world is roughly 2x as large as earth, why? Because fantasy. Wouldn't gravity be twice as powerful then you might ask yourself? Yes, but this is fantasy and it's normal gravity.

Won't this mean there can be super everests and shit like that? Yes. There can be.

Won't this make the angle of a degree larger than an earth one? Yes.

This map is supposed to make the regular people feel really really damn small.

Anyways. I want you's alls opinions on where you would want to start on this map. I'll start there and expand out.

Fuckin awesome! can we have the edges be non contiguous? A flat earth coin of a world? I have other setting related questions. How much magic(arcane/divine/weirdness)? Super advanced ancient civs that burned long ago? Pantheon? Creation myth? Does weather and climate adhere to any sanity? How many humans vs strange races? Iron age, victorian or steampunk sorcery? Are there demons and angels? Spirit world? Fey realms? How common are monsters? Dragons? Points of light in darkness or immersive cultures utilizing fantasy weirdness? Etc?

Edit: Should this thread be a repository of setting information?

so far (on irc) that we have ruled out guns and have a general consensus on a fantasy (Medieval/Magic) setting.

I'd rather make something more realistic-ish, it's hard to imagine a flat earth because then the distance at which you see drop off would just be whatever fog point it is. I don't know, I like to keep things geographically realistic-ish.

Arcane weirdness is probably going to be just as much as DND, I dunno yet. I haven't thought that far.

There are super advanced races which have ruins that I thought would be good, their greatness destroyed either by everyone enlightening onto another plane or killing each other with magic (or both), is another story.

No pantheon/creation myths yet. I plan to have actual gods/goddesses though made for it.

Weather an climate will have a geological explanation, whether it's super truthful or not, I don't know. But I try to make everything have some sort of explanation. That being said, that won't make the world super boring, on the contrary, I want to try to make it super interesting and will create a lot of tectonic weirdness.

Again, not sure, haven't thought that far into humans vs. strange races. I hope to break off from the typical tolkien dwarves/humans/elves/orcs concept though.

Iron age sorcery? I think? like Bustos said, Medieval/magic setting, very generic.

Demons/Angels or something similar? Definitely.

Spirit World? Yes, I plan to have some sort of "higher plane" for this

Fey Realms? Not sure what that means.

Monsters are very common! Lots of monsters. I want this planet to be wild!

Dragons? Definitely.

Immersive Cultures I think, but I want to keep elements for people to relate to. Such as humans.

I'm just going to go ahead and work on place 10 based on the rule of three and say most of you want to be at the 10th place.

Sorry if you didn't get to poll.

Oz asked me to write up a brief description of a generic kingdom setting. Behold:

Quote

Kingdom of Coqueterre

Motto: Anuraktap and my duty!

Capital: Arloise

King: Eudes the Strong

Description: The Kingdom of Coqueterre is a decentralized, feudal monarchy in its sixth century of existence. In distant provinces, the authority of the central government is barely felt, and are ruled by dukes and counts who have varying allegiances to the central government and varying levels of interest in the welfare of the common people. Provinces closer to Arloise, the center of royal power, are more wealthy and more densely populated. Eudes the Strong, king of Coqueterre, has been in power for nearly twenty years. He has a reputation as a great builder and military commander, but is cruel and and somewhat unfair.

The Coqueterrish people are hard-nosed and hard-working. Their patron deity is Anuraktap, goddess of passion and amorous love. In the cities, people find time for leisure by visiting cockfights, which is considered by many to be the national sport.

The national language is Coqueterrish, but most scholars or people that regularly work with foreigners know the region's lingua franca.
