Title: Minecraft Again
Post by: Myroria on April 29, 2015, 12:12:05 PM
Would anyone be interested in starting up a Minecraft server again? Part of me would love to make my own centipede factory (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IFfLCuHSZ-U).

There are some problems, though:

I don't know about anyone else but I haven't played minecraft in like three years and I don't get all this new crap they added. Also it seems like everyone that plays it now are all 8 years old.

Is minecraft more expensive now for new players? I bought it years ago but I don't know how much it is for beginners.

Related to the above, is it possible to run a server on an older version of minecraft without all this extra crap we don't need?

Honestly, I'm on the fence.  I would both love to finally have a reason to play Minecraft again, but we must be honest; it's dying as we speak.  Overall, it's worth a shot.

Is it really dying? I don't know much about it; I haven't played it in a few years.

I'm with Myroria in that I am old and afraid of change. I would be tempted to play an old version of Minecraft.

And Myroria, you know you don't need Minecraft to make a cent-i-pede factory...

According to This helpful, red-arrowed tutorial (http://www.wikihow.com/Downgrade-Minecraft), playing on old versions is indeed possible, and you can still play online so long as everyone uses the same version. I'll try this firsthand with my Minecraft install tonight and get back to you guys!

Would it be possible to do a Tekkit server with aforementioned centipedes and factories?

I'm not sure if we could do it simultaneously with an outdated server. We could hold a vote on what people would want more, unmodified old or newly updated.

So I was able to get Minecraft running using the Beta 1.7.3 version, which is what we were using in July 2011. A server from this website (https://mcprohosting.com/) that could hold 20 people would cost $7.49 per month. I'd be willing to get one if there's enough interest in this.

Truthfully, looking at the updated block list (http://hydra-media.cursecdn.com/minecraft.gamepedia.com/3/32/Template1.png) it looks like a lot of new ones that would be very useful aesthetically have been added. I would not be against having an up to date version. The core gameplay far as I know is largely unchanged.

The core gameplay between 1.7.3b and the current version is massively different. The beta version was much more sandbox, and the up to date version, at least to me, seems really adventure based.

Should we hold a vote?

What if we made the server Creative Mode?  That would be cool!

I would prefer survival as well. It's what we did last time and worked well then.

Well, I haven't played it on PC, but if you guys do a map, let me know and count me in.  My, I'll be willing to p.p. you some funds to offset the cost.

I do honestly prefer survival as well, I like how it feels like the world is growing organically.

I'll start a vote tonight on whether to use an old version or the modern one. Thanks for the offer, bigbaldben! I'll pay for the first month or two for now but if it grows and we need a bigger server I'll probably beg for money from some of you. ;)

Wonderful.  I say put up these options:

1 - Beta 1.7
2 - Beta 1.8
3 - Release 1.2
4 - Release 1.3
5 - Current Version (Will be Updated)

The options above are very different from one another, and it makes sense to have these major versions in the vote.

I would be okay with using a newer version; it might give some variety and I do like having more centip- things to make. Also I feel the same way as Gulliver with respect to the mode (survival over creative).

I'd prefer the newest one.  I think if you know how to play the older versions you won't have a problem with the newer ones.  It still boils down to moving blocks around, right?

I think I'd prefer the new one so I have more types of blocks to create with. At the very least, I think we should give it a try and if we all hate it we can downgrade.

I'm fine with the newest version if everyone else is. Do you think we really need a poll, then? Everyone interested seems pretty unanimous.

I also think we should use the latest version, but a vote is always good just in case.   :)
